VW takes global sales crown in first half of 2015 with 5.04 million units
The Volkswagen Group managed to sell 5.04 million vehicles in the first half of the year, but Toyota is breathing down its neck.
It is a very close race for the global sales crown as in the first six months of 2015 there was only a 20,000-car gap between VW and Toyota. VAG (including MAN and Scania) shifted 5.04 million units whereas Toyota (including Daihatsu and Hino) came in second with 5.02 million vehicles.
These impressive figures are actually lower compared to the first half of 2014 as VW's sales went down by 0.5% while Toyota sold 1.5% fewer units. It's the same story with General Motors as their sales dropped by 1.2% to 4.86 million units, thus grabbing third place in the sales race.
As a reminder, last year Toyota came out on top with 10.23 million units, followed by the Volkswagen Group with 10.14 million units and General Motors with 9.92 million vehicles. Toyota has been the best-selling car company in the world since 2012, but it will be tricky for them to keep the crown this year.
