Kia Niro visits Geneva for Euro debut

The Kia Niro is making its first European appearance during the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

 

Kia first revealed the Niro hybrid in Chicago earlier this year and now the vehicle is on display in Geneva. It will enter series production in May with European sales scheduled to kick off in Q3.

 

The crossover-inspired hybrid combines a 105-horsepower 1.6-liter petrol GDI engine with a 44-hp electric motor and a 1.56-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The system’s combined output stands at 141 hp (104 kW), channeled to the wheels through a 6-speed double-clutch transmission (6DCT), with a maximum 195 pound-feet (264 newton meteres) torque available in first gear. Kia says it’s targeting sub-89 grams per kilometer of CO2 emissions on combined cycle.

 

Despite its hybrid system, the Niro offers good levels of practicality with 14.86 cubic feet (421 liters) of boot volume and room for up to five passengers. Starting from Q4 of 2016, the model will be available with optional towing functionality, allowing owners to tow braked loads of up to 2,866 lbs (1,300 kg).

 

In order to provide better fuel efficiency, the Niro comes equipped with the so-called Eco Driver Assistance System that includes a Coasting Guide that effectively tells the driver when to coast and when to brake.
