Hyundai IONIQ trio electrifies Geneva
Hyundai has staged the global debut of the IONIQ in its three different versions at the Geneva Motor Show that already opened its doors for visitors.
Hyundai made a presentation of the model in South Korea and the hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric trio is making its first big show appearance in the Palexpo center in Geneva. The company announced it will first launch the IONIQ Hybrid, shortly followed by the IONIQ Electric. The last to join the market will be the IONIQ Plug-in, but still no exact launch dates have been announced for the three.
The hybrid has a system that uses a 1.6-liter GDI petrol engine with 105 horsepower (78 kilowatts), supported by an electric motor that provides additional 44 hp (32 kW). The combined system power stands at 141 hp (104 kW), while the vehicle has 79 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometer. The electric motor is powered by a 1.56-kWh lithium-ion-polymer battery, while power reaches the wheels thanks to a dual-clutch gearbox.
The IONIQ Plug-in adds more than 31 miles (50 kilometers) of pure electric range, thanks to a bigger 8.9-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. In this configuration, the CO2 emissions should be no more than 32 g/km, according to Hyundai.
Probably the most attractive version in terms of running costs will be the IONIQ Electric that will have an estimated range of over 155 miles (250 km) on a single charge. Providing an instant torque of 218 pound-feet (295 newton meters) and a maximum output of 120 hp (88 kW), the electric motor can accelerate the car up to 103 miles per hour (165 kilometers per hour). The model differs from its hybrid brothers with its aerodynamically-optimized front end and wheels, while the interior lacks the traditional gear shift.
