Toyota GT86 facelift revealed ahead of New York debut
Toyota has taken the wraps off the 2017 GT 86 facelift bound to show up next week in New York.
The rear-wheel-drive coupe has gone through mild cosmetic surgery that started at a front where there’s now a bigger central air intake. Toyota’s designers have come up with a new look for the front bumper and there are also revised fog light housings along with new graphics for the LED headlights. The GT 86 facelift also has tweaked turn indicators and a fresh set of wheels with twisted spokes.
Images of the interior are not available at this point, but Toyota says quality is up a notch thanks to new leather and Alcantara upholstery and an Alcantara-covered instrument panel. The same finish has also been applied onto the door trims, while new cloth upholstery with silver stitching is added to the catalog. A slightly different steering wheel is being offered for the 2017MY with an “86” center logo and built-in audio controls.
The changes are skin deep as the engineers have optimized the suspension by implementing updated shock absorbers and spring rates. These modifications will boost agility and make the GT 86 easier to control, according to Toyota.
While the naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine is carried over on the Euro model, the US-Spec Toyota 86 (which replaces the Scion FR-S) has an extra 5 horsepower and 5 pound-feet of torque. This means the four-cylinder boxer engine pumps out 205 hp and 156 pound-feet of torque.
In addition, the American version also has tweaked gear ratios for the six-speed manual gearbox to bring “additional performance.” Another novelty on the 2017 Toyota 86 is the addition of Hill Start Assist (HAC) system to prevent the car from rolling back on steep hills.
The 2017 Toyota 86 will be on display next week at the New York Auto Show and is set to go on sale in the United States this fall. The European GT 86 will arrive towards the end of the year.
