2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet brings open-air V8 performance
Mercedes-AMG has staged the world premiere of the C63 Cabriolet on the dawn of the 2016 New York International Auto Show.
Echoing its fixed roof sibling, the range-topping model of the C Class Cabriolet lineup is set to bring open-top thrills thanks to the new familiar biturbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. As it’s the case with the other C63 models, the cabrio will be available with 469 hp & 479 lb-ft in the standard model and 503 hp & 516 lb-ft in the C63 S. Output will be delivered to the wheels exclusively through a seven-speed automatic transmission.
In terms of performance, the C63 Cabriolet will need just 4.1 seconds until 60 mph (96 kph) whereas the C63 S is going to be 0.1s quicker. The electronic top speed limiter will be programmed at 155 mph (250 kph) on the C63 and at 186 mph (300 kph) if you upgrade to the C63 S.
On the styling front, the changes compared to the coupe are on a subtle level, once we exclude the switch to an electrically retractable soft top. The C63 Cabriolet gets 18-inch wheels painted in titanium grey whereas the S has 19-inch rims featuring a similar look. Those willing to pay more can go for the larger 20-inch alloy wheel set finished in matte black.
Another difference between the two versions is the type of the rear-axle limited-slip differential which is mechanical on the C63 and electronic on the C63 S. The C63 S also gets a “RACE” mode for the transmission, whereas the C63 only has “Comfort”, “Sport”, and “Sport+.” In addition, the S has dynamic engine mounts that adapt their stiffness to the driving conditions as a move to improve handling and comfort.
Both the C63 and C63 S Cabriolets are programmed to hit US dealers this fall.
