BMW confirms i8 Roadster & more M models

BMW has unveiled its new business plan at the company's Annual Accounts Press Conference in Munich.

 

The comprehensive plan calls for the development of a "revolutionary new BMW i model that will raise premium individual mobility to previously unknown levels." The BMW iNEXT initiative also calls for the company to bring new forms of automated driving and digital connectivity together with a new generation of electric mobility, lightweight construction, and trailblazing interior design.

The company was coy on specifics but confirmed plans for an a Mini plug-in hybrid and an i8 Roadster in 2018. The automaker also revealed the i3 lineup will be expanded to include a new variant that has a larger battery.

 

Despite the focus on plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, BMW believes a variety of alternative powertrains will exist alongside each other in the future. As a result, the company is continuing to develop hydrogen fuel-cell technology and notes current test vehicles have a range up to 435 miles.

 

BMW also revealed the combustion engine will continue to play a "major role for many years to come." The company didn't have much to say about its future engine lineup but noted the Efficient Dynamics NEXT initiative will look for ways to improve the efficiency of combustion engines.

 

Speaking of combustion engines, BMW confirmed plans for an expanded M and M Performance lineup. The latter variants will be in high volume segments to capitalize on the "growth and earnings potential of the BMW M brand."
