The GLK never received a range-topping “63” version, but Mercedes-AMG seems to be willing to make up for lost time with the GLC63 which will be more powerful than originally believed. Just about everyone assumed the GLC63 would get the C63’s hardware, but that’s not going to be the case as Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers told CarAdvice it will actually get its drivetrain from the yet unreleased 2017 E63.

 

What this means is the GLC63 will have more than the 469 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque found in the C63. Consequently, the GLC63 S will be stronger than the C63 S which has 503 hp and 516 lb-ft. Moers also said the GLC63 will have an all-wheel drive layout and a nine-speed automatic gearbox, whereas the C63 has a RWD setup and a seven-speed transmission.

 

Confirmed details about the engine’s output are not available at the moment of writing, but the E63 is rumored to have 550 hp while the E63 S is estimated to pack a 580-hp punch. What we do know from Moers is the E63 will have a “totally new drivetrain, with a new four-wheel-drive system engineered by us.” He went on to specify all future 63-badged models will use the new AMG-developed all-paw setup engineered to provide a RWD experience whenever the driver wants to have fun.

 

While the Mercedes-AMG E63 is likely due to arrive in October at the Paris Motor Show, the GLC63 will probably be introduced by the end of the year or early 2017.
