Honda midsize SUV and Acura compact SUV heading to Beijing
Honda and Acura will each have an SUV premiere at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show.
The peculiar Concept D is about to make the transition to a production model, as Honda has announced it will launch a production version in Beijing. Other details about the model have not been released, but we do know it will be a midsize SUV and is expected to wear the “ UR-V ” nameplate. It will act as Honda’s flagship SUV in China and is believed to get naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter and turbocharged 2.0-liter engines hooked up to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Front-wheel drive is going to be standard, but the upper models will get an AWD layout.
As far as Acura’s compact SUV is concerned, it will be the company’s first model to be assembled in China. A while ago we found out Acura trademarked the “CDX” moniker with the Chinese bureau and chances are this name will be used for the high-riding model. Acura calls it a “compact SUV,” but reports are suggesting the CDX will be a rebadged variant of the Honda HR-V which is a subcompact crossover.
One possible explanation is the model will be more than just a case of rebadging, with Acura possibly making the CDX a little bit bigger to fit into the compact genre. That would makes sense taking into account rear legroom is very important in China, so the CDX could get a stretched wheelbase and maybe a bigger trunk. The fact that it’s going to be made locally is another indication the model could be different than the HR-V, especially since Acura says it’s “all-new.”
It’s worth mentioning that Acura trademarked the “CDX” designation not only in China, but also in United States and there are reasons to believe it will hit stateside for the 2017 or 2018 model year. The U.S. model could simply be a posh HR-V.
We will find out the identity of Acura’s China-bound compact SUV on April 25 when the Beijing Motor Show will open its doors for the press.
