2017 BMW M5 spied with production lights
BMW is almost ready with the next generation of the 5 Series that will be revealed this fall, celebrating the company's 100th anniversary. As a natural addition to the model's range, the M5 is expected to arrive next year - and here we have another revealing batch of spy photos.
While we’ve already seen prototypes of the high-performance sedan testing, this time our spies have managed to snap a vehicle wearing production headlights. This may sound intriguing, but there are no big surprises – the lighting cluster seems pretty familiar, featuring LED daytime running lights and integrated turning signals. At the back, we see heavily camouflaged taillights that appear to be inspired by the ones on the 7 Series flagship cruiser.
BMW is taking the evolutionary path developing the new M5, but still some important changes over the current model are planned. For example, this will be the first generation of the vehicle that will be offered with an optional xDrive all-wheel drive system, channeling the power from the engine to all four wheels. But what’s even more interesting, the M5 will no longer be available with a manual transmission, if we are to believe a recent report, because “demand had dropped to zero” for the 6MT.
Regardless of customers' choice from RWD or AWD, the sedan will be powered by a 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine, retuned to deliver somewhere in the region of 625 horsepower (460 kilowatts) – some 25 hp (18 kW) more than the power of the M5 “30 Jahre M5.” It will enable the car in rear-wheel drive guise to reach 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) from a standstill in 3.7 or 3.8 seconds, while top speed could be in excess of 200 mph (322 km/h).
We believe the new M5 will be launched before the end of next year, but before that the Bavarian automaker will reveal the 5 Series sedan, Touring, and GT.
