VW Golf GTI Clubsport S unveiled
Volkswagen is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI in speculator fashion by unveiling the Golf GTI Clubsport S which has just broken the front-wheel-drive production vehicle speed record at the Nürburgring.
The Golf GTI Clubsport S is a three-door hatchback that features an aggressive body kit and 19-inch Pretoria-style alloy wheels with semi-slick Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires. The car also has bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, and tinted rear windows. In a nod to the original GTI, the model will be available exclusively in three original colors including Deep Black Pearl Effect, Pure White, and Tornado Red.
The sporty styling continues in the interior as designers installed two light-weight racing seats, an Alcantara-wrapped sport steering wheel, and special seat belts with red accents. Drivers will also find a golf ball shifter, piano black accents, and “Honeycomb 40” trim.
In order to ensure the Golf GTI Clubsport S is as light as possible, the interior has been stripped of the rear seats, center armrest, and some sound insulation. Engineers also installed a smaller battery, aluminum brake covers, and an aluminum subframe for the front suspension. These changes enable the car to weigh 2,998 pounds which is roughly 66 lbs less than a similarly equipped Golf GTI Clubsport.
Under the hood, the 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder engine has been equipped with a new fuel pump, a sportier exhaust system, and an optimized ECU. Thanks to these modifications, the engine produces 310 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. It is connected to a six-speed manual transmission which enables the car to accelerate from 0-62 miles per hour in 5.8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 162 mph.
Production of the Golf GTI Clubsport S will be limited to 400 units and 100 cars will be reserved for German customers.
