Porsche unveils new biturbo V8 engine
Porsche has quietly unveiled a new biturbo V8 engine at the Vienna Motor Symposium.
Set to be used in the next-generation Cayenne and Panamera, the engine is loosely based on the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that powers the Audi S4. The company declined to mention the engine's displacement but reportedly confirmed it will have a cylinder deactivation system with a so-called “half-engine mode.” The mode is activated at "low loads between 950 and 3500" revolutions per minute and helps to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 percent.
The engine has also been designed with multiple applications in mind so engineers optimized it for start/stop systems and hybrid applications. Engineers also worked hard to ensure the engine can be used in an assortment of different vehicles including front-wheel-drive models based on Audi's MLB platform as well as rear-wheel-drive models based on Porsche's MSB platform. Depending on its application, the engine will be connected to either an eight-speed automatic transmission or an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
In the Panamera Turbo, the engine will produce 541 horsepower (549 PS / 404 kW) and 567 pound-feet (770 Nm) of torque. Despite being more powerful than the outgoing biturbo 4.8-liter V8, the new engine will have "significantly reduced" CO2 emissions.
