Potential Porsche Panamera coupe prototype spied?
It still has four doors, but this Porsche Panamera prototype is likely a test bed for a new Panamera coupe. Though we haven’t even (officially) seen the new Panamera sedan yet, the German automaker appears to already be developing a two-door variant.

A little shorter in length and a little wider than other Panamera prototypes we’ve spotted, this mule is visual evidence that Porsche is developing a sportier coupe version of its new Panamera. Porsche has not officially confirmed those plans publicly, but Porsche North America CEO Klaus Zellmer told Motor1 earlier this year that a coupe and convertible are in the cards. He told us that American buyers have strong interest in two-door variants based on the Panamera.

It was long rumored that Porsche was developing a smaller Panamera, nicknamed Pajun for Panamera Junior, in the same way the Macan crossover fits beneath the Cayenne. But with that car understood to have been canceled, Porsche will instead expand the Panamera lineup with two-door models.

Though we don’t expect to see them for a few years after the Panamera wagon debuts in 2017 or 2018 , a coupe and convertible model would go toe-to-toe with the BMW 6 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe/Cabriolet. Though the Panamera has never been a slouch, a coupe version would likely have sportier handling. It would also pack the four-door model’s punchiest engines, which are rumored to range all the way from a plug-in hybrid to turbocharged V6 and V8 mills.
