Mercedes-Benz S550e to get longer electric range

Mercedes-Benz' upcoming S-Class facelift will reportedly include a significant battery upgrade for the S550e plug-in hybrid.

 

The 2016 edition integrates an 8.7-kWh battery, good for an EPA-estimated range of 12 miles before the S550e's 3.0-liter biturbo V6 must be engaged to help share the load.

 

The mid-cycle update will jump to a 13.5-kWh pack, representing a 55-percent capacity increase, according to Car and Driver. Electric range is expected to more than double to around 30 miles, though it is unclear if the figure references the US or other markets.

 

Importantly, the higher-capacity battery is said to carry the same weight and packaging size as the outgoing module. It will also be paired with a stronger electric motor. The current model delivers combined output of 436 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, good for a zero-to-60 mph sprint in 5.2 seconds.

 

The revised S550e is not expected to arrive in the US until sometime next year as a 2018 model.
