New Skoda Kodiaq: latest details on Skoda's 7-seat SUV
Skoda has today issued a series of sketches of its new Skoda Kodiaq SUV, ahead of the launch later this year.
The brand confirmed the car's name in May, having previewed the new SUV with the Vision S concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March. It'll be unveiled ahead of the Paris Motor Show in September, going on sale with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines early next year. A plug-in hybrid will join the line-up later.
Looking at both the design sketches and the prototype test car, it's obvious Skoda will carry over the concept's sloping roofline, large clamshell bonnet, sleek headlights and wide grille. Roof bars and the large tailgate mark out the car's practical side, while bulging sills give it a more muscular look.
The rear end of the test car is much more hidden, with masked-off lights and windows, but from the drawings we can see the sharp lights and large rear window. It's clear that the Kodiaq will have plenty of space in the back, both in terms of passenger room (there's space for seven) and luggage space.
In terms of powertrain options, the range will consist of TSI turbo petrol and TDI turbo diesel units with outputs ranging from 125 PS and 220 PS. It’s not yet known if the Kodiaq will also be available with the 240 PS 2.0 BiTDI, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed there’s a market for it in this application.
Believe it or not, a plug-in hybrid powertrain is slated to join the Skoda Kodiaq lineup after the regular models go on sale in the Old Continent, packing a 1.4 TSI engine, an electric motor, and a lithium-ion battery pack.
The Kodiaq will have the Discovery Sport, as well as the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, as key rivals, but it’s likely to undercut all three, with a starting price of around ￡21,000.
