Take a peek inside Jeep’s Compass, Patriot replacement
Set to serve as a replacement for both the aging Compass and Patriot, Jeep’s brand new SUV will slot between the Renegade and Cherokee. Our spy photographers were on location to take several close shots of the model in question which is expected to receive the “Compass” moniker since Jeep believes it has more global appeal than the U.S.-focused “Patriot.”
The camouflage applied onto these prototypes was hiding a Grand Cherokee-influenced exterior design, while the partially unmasked cabin also appears to be derived from Jeep’s bigger SUV. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but perhaps some people would prefer a little bit of variety among the models. We find the exterior more promising than the interior and we are eager to see what’s hiding underneath that swirly disguise.
In terms of underpinnings, the new JeepCompass and Patriot replacement is expected to ride on a stretched version of the Small Wide Platform that served as foundation for the Fiat 500X and the Renegade. Codenamed “551,” the new model is expected to spawn an Italian version, as word on the street says Fiat will get its own model in 2017.
Getting back to the Jeep-badged model, recent spy images have shown it’ll get a more rugged Trailhawk derivative. As for engines, the familiar 2.4-liter four-cylinder, and the turbocharged 2.0-liter will likely be on offer and are going to be teamed up with a six-speed manual and a nine-speed auto. Both front- and all-wheel-drive versions will be available, while Europeans will also get a diesel engine.
Jeep will introduce the new SUV later this year in Brazil, quite possibly at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in November (8-20).
