Details emerge on next BMW Z4

The Z4 is one of the most anticipated new models that BMW has in the pipelines. The German car maker is keeping quiet about its upcoming roadster, but a new report sheds light on what we can expect to find under the hood.

 

Called G29 internally, the Z4 will be available in two variants called sDrive30i and M40i, respectively, when it goes on sale. The sDrive30i will use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, while the M40i will benefit from a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six unit. Both engines will send power to the rear wheels via either a standard manual transmission or an optional automatic unit controlled by shift paddles.

 

The M40i will be the driver-focused member of the lineup thanks to a tweaked suspension, a more responsive steering system, and bigger brakes. However, enthusiast website BMW Blog has learned that a full-on, M-tuned variant of the Z4 will not join the lineup.

 

Like we've previously reported, the Z4 will share its basic platform and a number of its mechanical components with the next Toyota Supra, but the two sports cars will look nothing alike. The Z4 will exclusively be offered as a convertible with a cloth soft top -- a setup that's markedly lighter than a folding hard top -- while the Supra will take the form of a coupe.

 

The next BMW Z4 is tentatively scheduled to break cover in 2018, meaning we might not see it until the 2019 model year. Enthusiasts saving up for the Supra could need to wait another year.
