2018 Ford Mustang getting 10-speed auto

A screen shot of the software Ford dealers use to order parts suggests that the Mustang is about to get a 10-speed automatic transmission.

 

The 10-speed 'box is a modified version of the unit that's currently available in the EcoBoost-powered 2017 F-150. That means it's a torque converter-based transmission, not a dual-clutch automatic. It's surprisingly compact, and it's made out of advanced materials such as alloys in order to keep weight in check.

 

The extra gears will make the Mustang more efficient than it is today, while also improving performance all across the rev range. However, it's too early to tell which of the pony car's three main engines the automatic will be bolted to. For what it's worth, F-150 buyers only get 10 gears if they order the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6.

 

The new transmission will be part of a far-reaching mid-cycle update that's expected to arrive in time for the 2018 model year. The Mustang will also receive a face-lift, a revised cabin, the latest generation of Ford's infotainment system. Additionally, the model's four-, six-, and eight-cylinder engines will get a bump in power. Fear not, three-pedal fans, the screen shot confirms that a six-speed manual will still be available.

 

The 2018 Ford Mustang will be presented at a major auto show next year. Nothing is official yet, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it in the metal for the first time during the Detroit Auto Show.
