Record first six months for UK car sales

The first six months of 2016 have been record breaking for the UK car market, with over 1,420,000 new registrations, but according to the latest figures from the Society of Manufacturers and Traders the market is slowing down.

 

Demand for new cars was up 3.2 per cent in the first half of 2016, but figures for June show a small, -0.8 per cent decline in sales compared to the previous year. June 2016 saw 255,766 new vehicle registrations. The outcome of the recent EU referendum, where the UK voted to leave the European Union, could trigger a further decline in new car sales.

 

The first six months of 2016 saw growth across all fuel types. Diesel and petrol registrations grew by 2.3 and 3.0 per cent compared to last year, while alternatively fuelled vehicles continue to rise in popularity. Registrations for alternatively fuelled vehicles were up 21.3 per cent compared to the first six months of 2015 - suggesting another bumper year for green car sales.

 

The last few months have shown a decline in private car registrations, with June figures showing private car purchases down by 4.5 per cent. Fortunately, fleet sales continue rise, with June numbers showing an equivalent 4.5 per cent increase.
