Camouflaged BMW Z5 hits the road again
BMW's forthcoming roadster, reportedly called the Z5, is back on Germany's roads for another round of testing. The one in these shots even wears the same license plate as the example in the last set of photos.
While this might be the same test car, these shots offer a closer look at the upcoming droptop. The Z5 has a classic roadster shape with a long hood and short rear deck. The fabric top also creates a graceful roofline when it’s up. The swirling camouflage hides the design details, but you can spot sporty touches like the trunk lip spoiler and dual exhausts. BMW still needs to cut a hole for the rear window, and the taillights are clearly placeholders, too.
The Z5's platform stems from cooperation between BMW and Toyota, but the two vehicles reportedly don't share much else. The Germans plan their model as a back-to-basics roadster to replace the somewhat plush Z4, and there's no M version in the current product plan. Rumors hint the Japanese automaker would use the chassis to underpin a coupe that would revive the Supra nameplate.
Magna Steyr will reportedly begin building the BMW and Toyota in 2018. Based on that timetable, the German automaker will possibly debut the Z5 sometime in 2017.
