Kia has been caught testing the refreshed 2017 Soul during hot-weather evaluations in Death Valley. These are the best shots yet of the boxy hatchback.

 

Kia’s camouflage does a good job of hiding the biggest changes at both ends, but we can still spot some alterations through it. The new headlights have a single projector at each corner, and what are possibly turn signals flanking the grille. Dual exhausts poke out of the rear bumper. Inside, the company hides the center stack with a piece of fabric, which suggests possible upgrades for the infotainment system.

 

The tweaked tailpipes on this test car suggest that it might be the forthcoming turbocharged model. The engine is likely Hyundai-Kia’s 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder, which makes 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet in vehicles like the Forte Koup and Forte5. It's a healthy upgrade over the 164-hp 2.0-liter naturally aspirated in the current Soul. This test car uses an automatic transmission, which is possibly the six-speed gearbox from the other forced induction powerplants. A six-speed manual might also be available.

 

We should get a complete look at the refreshed Soul soon because an American commercial for the model says it arrives in “Winter 2016.” The timeframe suggests the vehicle would come to market for the 2017 model year.
