Panamera to borrow 918 hybrid tech for 700-hp range-topper
The second-generation Porsche Panamera doesn't arrive at European dealers until November, but Porsche already has hotter models in the works to slot above the currently range-topping Turbo. According to an anonymous insider speaking to Motor Trend, the most scorching of these additional versions pairs the sedan's biturbo V8 with a hybrid to generate around 700 horsepower (522 kilowatts).
The unnamed source claims that the hybrid components come from the 918 Spyder, which could indicate electric motors on the front and rear axle. The powertrain would allegedly produce a stupendous 800 pound-feet (1085 Newton-meters) of torque. This person doesn't know when this powerhouse would debut. We think it would be a good way to show Porsche customers the brand's electric tech before the Mission E's debut around 2020.
Porsche likes having a broad model range, and this source claims to Motor Trend that at least two other Panamera variants are in development. For those looking for efficiency from their sport sedan, the company would offer a hybrid with a supercharged V6. Unlike the biturbo V8 version, this one would put a bigger emphasis on improving fuel economy. Buyers who want a little more grunt than the current Turbo can look forward to the Turbo S. The insider alleges it would have about a 30-hp (22-kW) boost over the second-gen 542-hp (404-kW) model.
If this insider is right, then there's still a lot to look forward to from the Panamera. Spy shots show a shooting brake is already under development for customers looking for more interior room. In addition, rumors hint that Porsche might be considering adding a coupe and convertible to the lineup. So many design options and available powertrains should be able to fill any customer's desires.
