Mercedes-AMG announces the demise of the RWD E63 for next gen
More than a year ago, we heard Mercedes-AMG Tobias Moers saying the next-generation E63 could be sold exclusively with an all-wheel-drive layout. Now, a decision has been made and the forthcoming high-performance midsize model will indeed be available only in a 4MATIC flavor. While the decision to kill the RWD version will upset purists, Mercedes-AMG says there’s simply not enough demand to keep the tail-happy E63 alive since fewer than 10 percent of customers are getting the RWD model.

Moers reiterated the next E63 will benefit from a brand new all-wheel-drive system which will represent the “biggest step we ever did with a generation.” He went on to specify the new E63 will not have rear-wheel steering like the recently introduced GT R, but he did reveal the technology will be implemented on future AMG products.

The man in charge at AMG confirmed the highly-anticipated E63 will make use of a biturbo 4.0-liter V8 similar to the one that powers the C63 and GTs. While the block, crankshaft, and other bits will be carried over, in the E63 the engine will have different cylinder heads and a new arrangement for the turbochargers. These changes will enable a “different level of power output,” hinting the eight-cylinder engine will have somewhere in the region of 600 horsepower.

Speaking of power, it’s worth reminding that a spec sheet of the new E63 emerged onto the web several months ago, indicating the standard model will have 571 hp whereas the E63 S will pack 612 hp. Mercedes-AMG has not confirmed the numbers, but that leaked document seemed legit to us. That sheet came from Russia and also revealed some performance numbers, with the E63 S running to 62 mph (100 kph) in just three and a half seconds before hitting an electronically-capped 155 mph (250 kph).

Taking into account Mercedes-AMG launched the GT R just a few days ago, it probably means the new E63 won’t be introduced very soon. We’ll probably see the car at the Paris Motor Show in early October, although an online reveal in September seems likely.
