Hyundai i30 N spied taking a closer step towards production
A new batch of spy photos gives us another chance to follow Hyundai’s on-going development of the i30 N hot hatch. Our spies claim the speedy five-door under the camouflage here is the production version.
Hyundai’s camo hides a lot, but we can get a few peeks at the i30 N underneath. For example, the lower front fascia is obvious in these photos, and the grille appears larger than stock, too. The holes in the hood cladding hint that there might be vents there in the future. In profile, you can spot lower sills and see robust-looking brakes through the wheels. Hyundai’s obfuscation does nothing to hide a roof spoiler and dual exhausts at the back.
Hyundai’s N performance sub-brand got its feet wet with the i20 N Sport. We expect the i30 N to be much more potent, though. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and a video shows it making 260 horsepower (194 kilowatts) and 228 pound-feet (309 Newton-meters) of torque when testing on a dyno. The model would use a six-speed manual gearbox to spin the front wheels, and an automatic could arrive later. In addition to the more exciting powertrain, the hot hatch also gets sharper handling and better brakes.
The i30 N arrives in 2017 as a challenger against the venerable Volkswagen GTI. Hyundai might offer the five-door in two trims. There would be a standard version, and a track-focused performance pack would make the South Korean hot hatch even more capable.
