The next-gen BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid is now doing hot-weather testing, and a new batch of spy shots lets us check out the green-minded sedan. There are even photos of how it looks inside.
Aesthetically, this 5 Series reaffirms the styling from the many previous spy shots of the upcoming sedan. In general, the design is an evolution of the current model. These close shots provide another great opportunity to see its LED headlights, though.
These spy shots provide a great look inside the 5er, too. This test driver keeps the center console somewhat messy, but the simplified iDrive control still stands out. A large infotainment screen sits on top of the dashboard.
The 5 Series PHEV looks like any other version of the sedan, but we get a hint about this one’s powertrain from the “Hybrid Test Vehicle” placard on the back. The company will reportedly offer the green powertrain in two forms. The 530e would use a turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor to make about 280 horsepower (209 kilowatts) and have roughly 22 miles of EV range. For those wanting more performance, the 540e would use a more sophisticated turbo four for a total system output of 326 hp (243 kW) but have a slightly lower electric range. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system could be optional on both.
Rumors originally suggested the new 5 Series would debut in October at the Paris Motor Show, but the latest reports put the unveiling at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Regardless of the location, BMW probably won’t launch the PHEV from the very beginning. Instead, it will arrive a few months after the sedan goes on sale next year.
