VW Group extends global sales lead through June

Volkswagen Group has continued to extend its lead as the world's largest automaker in recent months.

The company inched ahead of Toyota in the first quarter, exceeding the Japanese rival's deliveries by a thin margin of around 40,000 units. Both automakers were dealing with separate problems at the time, with the TDI scandal affecting VW sales and materials and parts shortages affecting output at Toyota factories.

VW Group's brand portfolio has collectively sold nearly 5.12 million units through June, representing an increase of 1.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

Toyota, meanwhile, has experienced a 0.6-percent slide to just under five million units in the first six months of the year. The lackluster performance has allowed VW to gain a comfortable 120,000-unit lead going into the second half.
