2017 Hyundai Elantra Earns Top Safety Pick+ Award

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra compact sedan, which is on sale now at Hyundai dealerships, earned the 2016 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

"The 2017 Elantra earns across-the-board good ratings for crashworthiness, including in the challenging small overlap test," the institute said in a statement. "It also has an available front-crash prevention system that earns a superior rating."

The small overlap test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or hits an object such as a tree or utility pole.

The redesigned Elantra's good small overlap rating is an improvement over the previous generation, which was rated "acceptable."

The rating applies only to 2017 Elantras built after March, when additional modifications were made.

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Elantra includes seven airbags, including a new driver's knee airbag. Other standard items include electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control and antilock brakes.

New optional safety equipment for 2017 includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Buyers also can add lane-departure warning, a lane-keep assist system, blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist.
