VW's new SUV to be called Teramont
It was only a couple of days ago when we found out Volkswagen of America is in charge of baptizing the new seven-seat SUV and now a new report indicates the model could be called “Teramont.” That is what a trademark filling from last December is indicating, and we also know VW registered it internationally at the beginning of June.
We won’t have to wait much longer to find out, since production of the three-row SUV will begin at the end of the year. That means an official reveal will occur in the months to come, quite possibly at the Los Angeles Auto Show in mid-November.
As for the car itself, it was previewed by the CrossBlue concept back in January 2013 and will ride on the group’s flexible MQB platform. Power is expected to come from the 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine offered in the U.S. version of the Passat, and it could be joined by a turbocharged 2.0-liter unit and a plug-in hybrid setup.
Production will take place in Chattanooga, Tennessee where Volkswagen is investing $900 million to expand the facility and get it ready for the SUV’s arrival. Following its reveal before the end of the year, the Teramont or whatever it will be called will likely go on sale early 2017.
