Kia planning performance push

Kia is planning an onslaught of sporty, GT-badged models.

 

The South Korean carmaker will soon expand the Optima lineup with a GT model in a handful of global markets. Â We won't get it in the United States, but it will be very similar to the SX trim that's already sold on our shores. Â It will receive a 2.0-liter turbo four rated at 245 horsepower, it will wear a specific body kit, and it will offer sportier handling than the rest of the lineup.

 

The next-generation Rio hatchback that's scheduled to arrive by the end of next year will also spawn a GT-badged model. Â It will likely surf the industry's downsizing wave and use a turbocharged three-cylinder engine in lieu of a turbo four.

 

While not all future Kia cars will be eligible to wear a GT emblem on the trunk lid, all models regardless of how performance-focused they are will be better to drive in the coming years. Â Engineers have been asked to design firmer suspension components and more direct steering systems in order to position Kia as a sportier alternative to sister company Hyundai, which builds more comfort-focused cars.
