Subaru Planning Electric SUV By 2021
Subaru is reportedly planning to debut a new all-electric SUV as the company seeks to keep pace with changing emissions laws in key markets.
That’s the word out of Japan, with local newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun claiming the carmaker is eyeing-off a 2021 launch date for the new project.
As with Subaru’s other SUVs, all-wheel-drive would be available and would likely feature heavily in the new design.
The EV is reportedly in the midsized category, and could be based around Subaru’s existing Forester or Outback wagons - the latter classified as a ‘large’ SUV in Australia.
Either way, Subaru’s global platform unveiled earlier this year will underpin the new model.
When asked about the project, Subaru spokesman Masato Saito was reportedly tight-lipped on the finer details, but admitted that the North American market would be targeted should it go ahead.
Beyond sales, the US market is also said to be a key driver for Subaru with the decision to ramp-up its low-emission and emission-free technology, with plans to release a plug-in hybrid for US buyers before 2018.
