2017 Honda Civic hatchback revealed, coming to the U.S. this fall

The latest Honda Civic is finally spawning its five-door hatchback variant, and the best news of all is that it’s coming to the U.S. market. When it hits our shores this fall, the 2017 Honda Civic hatchback will offer more powerful Sport trim levels, and it’ll eventually serve as the base for a wild Type R model.

 

The base 2017 Civic hatchback looks as racy as it will be practical, with a sleek, sloping roofline and an upswept beltline. The Sport Touring model seen here has a more aggressive body kit that includes a rear wing, new side skirts, and a center-exist exhaust. Honda says that cargo space beneath the liftgate is best-in-class, but hasn’t shared an exact figure. Back-seat legroom hasn’t suffered too much either, at 36.0 inches compared to 37.4 in the sedan and 35.9 in the coupe.

 

All hatches will come with a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, but with two power ratings. LX, EX, and EX-L trims get 174 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while Sport and Sport Touring, thanks to that exhaust, produce 180 hp and 162 lb-ft. Only the LX, Sport, and EX will offer a six-speed manual transmission; the CVT that comes standard on every other Civic hatch is expected to return 31 miles per gallon city and 40 mpg highway.

 

As on the Civic sedan and coupe, look for a generous level of equipment on the hatchback. Honda’s Display Audio touchscreen infotainment system comes on all but the base LX trim level, and features like heated seats, power front seats, and remote start are all available. Most trims will offer the Honda Sensing active-safety suite as an option. The 2017 Honda Civic Sport Touring comes standard with LED headlights, heated rear seats, and Honda Sensing.
