Volkswagen updates Beetle for 2017
Volkswagen has introduced the facelifted 2017 Beetle during the annual Beetle Sunshine Tour that took place this weekend in northern Germany.
The retro-chic compact gets redesigned bumpers on both ends that give it a sharper look and new-look lights. Well-spec'd models receive an additional air vent right below the hood for a sportier appearance, while all trim levels gain additional paint colors (including Bottle Green Metallic and White Silver Metallic) as well as an assortment of new 17- and 18-inch alloy wheel designs.
Inside, Volkswagen has added a brighter instrument cluster that's easier to read than before and a redesigned dash pad. The new model year also brings a handful of additional upholstery fabrics. The center console and the steering wheel's bottom spoke are both body-colored, which further spruces up the cabin. Finally, the Beetle is available with Volkswagen's MIB II infotainment system, a software that's compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
There are no mechanical modifications to report. That means the Beetle's volume engine is a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder that makes 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Those looking for a Beetle with a bit more oomph can step up to a 2.0-liter turbo four that delivers 210 horses and 207 pound-feet of twist. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, while a dual-clutch automatic is found on the list of options.
The 2017 Volkswagen Beetle and Beetle Convertible are scheduled to go on sale before the end of the year. Pricing information and additional trim details will be published in the coming weeks.
