The road to reveal was slow and painful, but the high-riding model from Mladá Boleslav is finally making its official premiere at a fancy event organized in Berlin. With crossovers and SUVs being all the rage these days in Europe and China.
With an overall length of 4.7 meters (185 inches), the big SUV is kind of like a Superb on stilts, but even more practical and roomier. Sure, it’s not the most exciting model in its segment, but it really does not have a rival when it comes to the amount of space it offers in its price bracket.
Speaking of which, cargo capacity varies from 720 liters (25.4 cubic feet) to a whopping 2,065 liters (73 cu. ft.) once the rear seats are folded. If you’re still not impressed, Skoda says you’ll be able carry items up to 2.8 meters (110.2 inches) long and there will also be the option for an electrically-operated tailgate for hauling even more. It will have enough punch to tow up to 2.5 tons (5,000 pounds) for the 2.0 TDI engine in 4x4 specification with the DSG transmission.
The interior is not only very spacious, but clever as well. There are three infotainment systems to choose from, starting with the 6.5-inch Bolero setup which comes with SmartLink, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay integration. Pay more for the 8-inch Amundsen and Skoda will throw in navigation and a display mode for when you will be going off-road. The high-end Columbus is going to come with a 64GB flash memory and the option of an LTE module as well as WLAN hotspot functionality.
As for engines, there are going to be a lot of them. That’s not really surprising since the Skoda Kodiaq is a member of the growing MQB family and as such it has access to the VW Group’s toolbox. The entry-level model is going to feature a 1.4 TSI with 125 hp (92 kW) and 147 lb-ft (200 Nm) of torque, while the beefier version will be rated at 150 hp (110 kW) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm). Those in need of more gasoline power will have to spend more to get the 2.0 TSI which will have 180 hp (132 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm).
On the diesel side we find the 2.0 TDI which will likely be the top pick among Kodiaq buyers and is going to be offered in 150 hp (110 kW) & 251 lb-ft (340 Nm) and 190 hp (140 kW) & 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) flavors. Depending on engine choice, Skoda will sell its large SUV with both front- and all-wheel-drive layouts along with a six-speed manual gearbox and a six- or seven-speed DSG.
On the safety side, the Kodiaq will be offered with just about the same level of equipment as you get in the flagship Superb, including adaptive cruise control, driver alert, and front assist with emergency braking. A first for the Skoda brand is going to be the Area View system featuring cameras at the front and rear fascias as well as in the mirror caps to provide a surround view of the vehicle which will be useful in tight spots and when going off-road.
Skoda has announced it will begin sales of the Kodiaq early next year, with pricing to be announced closer to the model’s market launch.
