Bentley Flying Spur W12 S debuts with 626 hp

The "S" added at the end of the Flying Spur W12’s name brings a 10 horsepower (7 kilowatts) and 15 pound-feet (20 Newton-meters) boost for the meaty biturbo 6.0-liter W12. Now developing a massive 626 hp (467 kW) and 605 lb-ft (820 Nm), the upgraded engine has given birth to the first production Bentley with four doors to surpass 200 mph, reaching 202 mph (325 kph) to be exact. Before it gets there, it needs four and a half seconds to hit 62 mph (100 kph), so it’s a tenth of a second quicker than the non-S model which maxes out at "only" 199 mph (320 kph).

 

All that power is channeled to both axles, but the rear wheels are getting 60 percent of the engine’s output. The bump in power is complemented by a special tune for the suspension which aims to improve handling and provide extra traction.

 

Matching the extra grunt coming from the W12 is an optional carbon ceramic brake kit that can be had with either black or red calipers. Compared to the standard twelve-cylinder Flying Spur, the hotter "S" model also has a different calibration for dampers as well as for the stability control system. It’s all for the sake of giving the massive sedan a livelier feel, despite its considerable weight of 2,475 kilograms (5,451 pounds) in non-S specification.

 

Besides implementing these mechanical tweaks, Bentley has also made some subtle cosmetic revisions by adopting glossy black body accents and seven-spoke, 21-inch wheels that have a similar finish. In addition, the headlight and taillight clusters have been given a black tint, while the lower bumper insert lends the model a more aggressive appearance. The front radiator grille featuring a glossy black finish has been borrowed from the Flying Spur V8 S, as was the Beluga rear diffuser and the side mirror caps. As a final touch, there’s a new "W12 S" badge located on the D-pillar to let everyone know it’s not the regular Flying Spur W12.
