2017 Hyundai i30 revealed ahead of Paris debut
After a little teasing and a lot of spy photos, Hyundai’s third-generation i30 is finally officially here. The five-door hatchback has a sleeker, more modern look than the current model, and a new engine debuts on it, too. The vehicle will make a public debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show and will go on sale in Europe in early 2017.
The i30 is the first Hyundai to get the brand’s new turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder. It produces 138 horsepower (103 kilowatts) and 179 pound-feet (242 Newton-meters) of torque. There’s also a naturally aspirated 1.4-liter with 98 hp (73.3 kW) and 99 lb-ft (134 Nm). A turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder makes 118 hp (88.3 kW) and 125 lb-ft (170 Nm). A 1.6-liter diesel is available in three states of tune: 94 hp (70kW), 109 hp (81kW), and 134 hp (100 kW). Depending on a customer’s engine choice, a person could choose either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The current i30 doesn’t look particularly stodgy, but the third-generation model is still a major aesthetic upgrade. The front has Hyundai’s new Cascading Grille, which should also appear on many other future vehicles. The design element comprises a larger hexagonal shape with a chrome outline. Swept back LED headlights accentuate the model’s width. A strong character line also runs from the tip of the lights and connects with the taillights, which creates a cohesive appearance in profile.
Underneath the more attractive body, the i30’s new platform is 62 pounds (28 kilograms) lighter and 22 percent more rigid than the current one.
The new i30’s interior looks far more upscale than the current one, and Hyundai packs the cabin with new tech, including a bevy of available driver safety assists. The infotainment screen appears to float in the center of the dashboard, and customers can choose either a five-inch unit or an optional eight-inch example with navigation. For some extra sunlight, a panoramic sunroof is also available.
