Report: BMW 3 Series EV, electric MINI get production nod
BMW executives have reportedly made progress in resolving an impasse over electrification, clearing the way for EV development projects.
The company earlier this year confirmed plans to redirect its 'i' division to focus on autonomous technology rather than electric powertrain technology. The announcement appeared to suggest development resources would be shifted away from EVs.
Signs of tension surfaced last week as BMW board members allegedly decided to skip the Paris auto show, instead convening emergency meetings to resolve a disagreement over EVs. Some executives may have grown wary of such investments due to the i3's market struggles, while others likely viewed Tesla's Model 3 preorders as reason to ramp up spending.
EV proponents appear to have emerged victorious, convincing other board members to approve production for several new models, unnamed sources have told Germany's Handelsblatt.
The upcoming battery-powered lineup is said to include a 3 Series variant, the X4 crossover and a MINI model. Previous rumors suggest MINI is taking inspiration from the Rocketman concept for a production EV, while the next-generation i8 could omit its gasoline engine in favor of a much more powerful pure-electric powertrain.
Details could be officially confirmed after BMW's management board makes its final decisions later this month.
