Mitsubishi Ground Tourer plug-in hybrid concept revealed for Paris
Another auto show, another alternatively-powered SUV concept from Mitsubishi. This time around, it’s the Ground Tourer Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, or in short, the “GT-PHEV.” It looks rather interesting with its scissor doors, slender lighting clusters, and the relatively low and flat roofline. As one would expect from a new concept, it does not have conventional side mirrors since these have been replaced by cameras to lend the plug-in SUV a sleeker appearance.
Mitsubishi has not released images of the interior, but it does say the cockpit-like cabin is covered in Burgundy leather and comes with a horizontal dashboard incorporating a center console that sits up high to ease access to the concept’s functions.
Motivation is provided by a plug-in hybrid electric setup consisting of a triple-motor powertrain delivering an undisclosed output. We do know the next-gen battery pack has enough energy for an electric range of up to 120 kilometers (75 miles). When driven in hybrid mode, the Ground Tourer concept will provide a maximum range of more than 1,200 km (745 miles), so the name of the vehicle is appropriate.
Mitsubishi goes on to specify the hybridized SUV has a full-time all-wheel-drive layout, with the combustion engine delivering its power to the front axle, while the dual electric motors positioned at the back are powering the rear wheels. The GT-PHEV also makes use of the company’s own Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) in order to achieve “new levels of handling stability” for a high-riding vehicle.
