Suzuki Ignis is an adorable little crossover in Paris

The second-generation Audi Q5 may very well be the most important crossover launch at the ongoing Paris Motor Show, but let’s not neglect this little fella. With a design inspired by models such as the first-gen Cervo and Vitara with a hint of previous-gen Swift, the new Ignis manages to stand out from the current crop of high-riding vehicles in its class, and it’s doing it with a quirky yet appealing design.

With a ground clearance of 180 mm (7 inches), the new Ignis should be able to tackle some of the more difficult roads, while the raised driving position is going to provide great visibility of what’s up ahead. Practicality is also pretty decent as well, with the trunk capable of swallowing up to 267 liters of cargo, or 227 liters for the ALLGRIP version. A neat feature is represented by the possibility of sliding the rear seats to enable a flexible loading area. Folding down the rear bench will further extend the available cargo space.

Since we’ve mentioned the term “ALLGRIP,” it refers to Suzuki’s viscous coupling four-wheel drive system capable of channeling the torque to the front and rear axle whenever it detects a loss in grip. Power is channeled to the road via either a standard five-speed manual gearbox, or an automated manual transmission based on the same five-speed manual.

Underneath the hood resides a 1.2-liter gasoline engine that can be had with a mild hybrid system featuring an integrated starter generation bundling a power generator, a lithium-ion battery pack, and the electric motor. Output stands at 66 kilowatts (88 horsepower) and 88 pound-feet (120 Newton-meters of torque), enough to allow the 4WD-enabled hybrid version run to 62 mph (100 kph) in 11.5 seconds and top out at 165 kph. That’s the fastest-accelerating version of the bunch, while the slowest is the non-hybrid 2WD model, which needs 12.2 seconds for the same task. As for top speed, the 2WD models will do 170 kph (105 mph) whereas the grippy 4WD ones will only reach 165 kph (102 mph).

Suzuki has plans to put the Ignis on sale across Europe from January 2017, with other markets to follow.
