If fuel economy is your top priority, the 530e is the one to have since it has everything you like about the regular 5 Series G30 in a more efficient package without having to sacrifice performance. From the outside, it looks just about the same as the conventionally-powered models, but it does come with a blue inlay for the kidney grille, an “iPerformance” badge and obviously, the second cap to plug it in and recharge the battery pack.
The powertrain has been basically sourced from the smaller 330e, which we reviewed some months ago. It combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 184 horsepower (135 kilowatts) with an electric motor rated at 95 hp (70 kW) for a total output of 252 hp (185 kW) and 310 pound-feet (420 Newton-meters) of torque.
The hybrid punch is delivered to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and enables the 530e run to 62 mph (100 kph) in a swift 6.2 seconds, thus making it 0.1s slower than the lighter 330e. There’s no word about top speed, but it should be in the same ballpark as the 330e’s 140 mph (225 kph). We do know that in all-electric mode the car will max out at 87 mph (140 kph).
More importantly, the new BMW 530e aims to provide a range of 45 kilometers (28 miles) when running solely on electric power, while used as a hybrid it will need just 2 liters / 100 km (117.6 mpg US or 141.2 mpg UK) with corresponding CO2 emissions of only 46 g/km. It’s worth pointing out that while the 330e has a 7.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the 530e makes use of a larger 9.2 kWh pack to match the car’s extra bulk.
