BMW says more M SUVs are coming
BMW currently has 10 M-flavored models in its portfolio, but that will change in the years to come as the company’s vice-president of sales and marketing for M models, Peter Quintus, has revealed plans for an M expansion. While details about which models are going to receive the treatment have not been released, Peter Quintus did hint the SUVs will be at the forefront of the M-ification.
He was likely referring to the X3 M, which has already been spotted tackling the Nürburgring. Chances are its coupe-ish sibling, the X4, will also get a high-powered M version further down the line. The regular third-generation X3 is expected to go on sale either by the end of 2017 or early 2018, with the M-flavored derivative slated to arrive probably by the end of 2018. We won’t be too surprised if the smaller X1 and the forthcoming X2 will spawn M versions as well at some point.
He went on to specify the BMW M offerings won’t grow to be as big as Mercedes-AMG’s portfolio, mentioning there will not be an M model in each model range. Reading between the lines, it means the front-wheel-drive 2 Series Active Tourer and its larger seven-seat Gran Tourer counterpart won’t get fully-fledged M versions. That being said, both MPVs can be specified with an optional M Sport Package.
