All-new Citroen C5 to echo the concept’s fastback design
To say a next-gen Citroen C5 is long overdue would be the understatement of the year taking into account the current model has been around since late 2007, thus making it even slightly older than the now retired Opel Insignia. But at least there’s a new one on the way and is expected to arrive in 2018 with an exterior appearance previewed by the interesting Cxperience concept.

Citroen through the voice of Maxime Picat, executive vice president Europe for the PSA Group, has made the promise it will “reinvent” the midsize model as a way to prove there are reasons enough for the C5 to live on. It is expected to lose the traditional sedan body style and opt for a more appealing fastback design in the same vein as the concept, according to Auto Express.

Underneath the entirely reworked bodywork will be an adaptation of the PSA’s EMP2 platform, which will pave the way for a more frugal plug-in hybrid derivative scheduled to arrive later in the life cycle. One of the C5’s technological highlights will be an innovative suspension featuring progressive hydraulic cushions as previewed with a C4 Cactus prototype earlier this year. Citroen has made the promise the new suspension setup will be so smooth that it will deliver a “flying carpet” effect by “creating the impression that the car is flying over any bumps and dips in the road.”

Taking into account the current car has been on sale for almost a decade, it shouldn’t come as a surprise some big upgrades are in tow for the cabin. The amalgam of physical buttons seen today inside the aging model will be removed in the C5’s next iteration to make room for a large touchscreen that will incorporate most of the vehicle’s functions. An entirely digital instrument cluster is also in the works to lend Citroen’s new midsize model a more high-tech look.

It’s too soon to say when the car will be revealed, but with reports indicating it will be out on the streets in 2018, we might see it that year at the Geneva Motor Show scheduled for early March. Unless the company with the double chevron logo will have it ready for the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
