Renault Kangoo Z.E. gets 50 percent boost in range

Renault has announced its new Kangoo Z.E. electric van will achieve a real-world range of 124 miles. The new and improved cargo van will make its official debut at the 2017 European Motor Show in Brussels, Belgium, next month.

 

The upgrade is thanks in part to new battery technology and a larger 41-kilowatt electric motor. The powertrain carries over from the current Zoe subcompact, which itself has an improved NEDC range of between 185 miles (300 kilometers) to 250 miles (400 kilometers). The Kangoo, meanwhile, boosts its official NEDC range from 106 miles to 168 miles – with 124 of those miles considered "real-world range."

 

Thanks to these improvements, the Renault Kangoo Z.E. now features the longest available driving range of any small van on the market. It bests its closest competition by 62 miles (for now), the Nissan e-NV200 and Citroen Berlingo, which both have a range of just 106 miles (170 kilometers) on a single charge.

 

Though Renault hasn’t put a price on its more-efficient Kangoo just yet, it will likely demand a premium over the €25,000 ($26,376) base price of the outgoing model. If you want a top-trim 5 Seater Zmaxi Ze, expect to pay close to €30,000 ($31,651). The new Kangoo Z.E. will make its debut on January 13, 2017.
