Mercedes-Benz to unveil new 'EQ' electric concept in Frankfurt
Mercedes-Benz will reportedly unveil a new electric concept vehicle at this fall's Frankfurt Motor Show. Known as the EQ A, the plug-in will take the form of a compact hatchback.
The EQ A is expected to be the volume leader of the EQ lineup, thanks in large to its starting price of about ￡35,000 ($44,765). It'll ride on Mercedes' modular electric architecture and should go on sale by 2020.
The EQ A will sport conventional hatchback styling with a normal hood and large greenhouse area. However, in order to differentiate Mercedes' BMW i3 rival from regular hatchbacks, the EQ A will sport the same kind of black panel grille treatment as the EQ C concept. The EQ A will presumably have four-doors and offer seating for five.
The EQ A will likely use a single electric motor to drive its front wheels, which should help keep costs low. However, insiders say Mercedes is also considering a two-motor model with all-wheel drive. The dual-motor EQ A would be positioned as a performance model and carry a premium price tag.
