Land Rover Discovery SVX Gets V8 Power, Better Off-Road Chops
A few years ago, I sat with Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations boss John Edwards while he outlined the three pillars of the SVO division: luxury, performance, and capability. We've seen the first two by way of vehicles like the Range Rover SVAutobiography and XE SV Project 8, among others. But when SVO speaks to capability, it specifically means off-road prowess – hence the arrival of this, the new Land Rover Discovery SVX.
The SVX has increased ground clearance and employs long-travel dampers, meaning the approach, departure, and breakover angles are all increased. The 20-inch aluminum wheels are wrapped in SVX-specific 275/55R20 Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires. Land Rover’s incredible Terrain Response 2 off-road system has been retuned to offer more grip when the going gets tough. Finally, for the first time, the Discovery SVX features Hydraulic Active Roll Control that allows for increased wheel articulation – important for slow-going off-road maneuvers.
Of course, Land Rover hasn’t stopped there. The Discovery SVX gets a unique powertrain: the company’s supercharged, 5.0-liter V8, with 518 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. You can’t get that on the normal Discovery, which means the SVX is not only the most off-road capable model, it’s got the most power, too.
To visually differentiate the SVX from lesser Discos, Land Rover has fitted new front and rear bumpers with new skid plates, as well as Rush Orange accents around the body. The Tectonic Grey paint is also SVX-specific, and inside, orange accents are found on the two-tone leather interior.
The best news? This isn’t just a Frankfurt Motor Show concept. Land Rover says the Discovery SVX will enter production sometime next year. We can’t wait.
