BMW i Vision Dynamics Is 4 Series Gran Coupe's Electric Brother
BMW promises the Vision Dynamics study, making its world premiere at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, not only offers “a look ahead to the e-mobility experience of the future with a new level of sporting elegance,” but will eventually evolve into a production electric vehicle positioned between the i3 and i8. The Bavarian brand plans to launch no less than 25 models with an electrified drive system by 2025, of which 12 will be purely-electric machines.
The EV is powered by an electric system, capable of accelerating it from a standstill to 62 miles per hour (0-100 kilometers per hour) in four seconds. Top speed stands at 120 mph (200 kph), while a single charge of the batteries provides a maximum range of 373 miles (600 kilometers).
The concept’s design with short overhangs, a long wheelbase, and flowing roofline has one very important mission – to shape the BMW of the future, a car that will feature semi- or fully autonomous functions. The full-length glass surface running from the windscreen to the rear window, for example, creates a roomy atmosphere in the interior and allows all passengers an equally good view out during an autonomous trip.
Electric powertrain means the legendary kidney grilles at the front no longer need to provide fresh air into the engine compartment. Instead, the Vision Dynamics study deploys them as “declarations of technological know-how” with hidden sensors turning them into an “intelligence surface.”
