New Cayenne Turbo Is The Porsche 911 Of SUVs
About two weeks after the premiere of the third generation Porsche Cayenne, the German sports brand is presenting the model’s most powerful variant. Taking its place at the top of the range, the new Cayenne Turbo packs a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine with 550 horsepower (404 kilowatts). That’s 30 hp (22 kW) more than the previous generation.
Thanks to its new engine, and an optimized eight-speed automatic gearbox, the mighty SUV can reach 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in only 4.1 seconds. If you want to be a tad quicker, opt for the additional Sport Chrono Package, which reduces that time by 0.2 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 178 mph (286 kph).
Aside from the impressive dynamic characteristics, Porsche also promises the new engine is much more responsive thanks to a new exhaust turbochargers arrangement and shortened exhaust paths between the combustion chambers and the turbos. In addition, the revised layout of the motor has given the engineers the opportunity to install it lower in the construction of the SUV, which has a positive effect on the driving dynamics due to the lower center of gravity.
The automaker also claims that, thanks to a new active chassis with three-chamber air suspension, the Cayenne Turbo combines the best of three worlds – “the precision of a sports car, the comfort of a saloon and the adaptability of an off-road vehicle.” Just like a sports car, the vehicle gets a set of mixed tires with standard dimensions of 285/40 at the front and 315/35 at the rear. The whole suspension could be controlled through the car’s infotainment system with five driving programs available. The new Cayenne Turbo becomes the first vehicle in its segment to feature active aerodynamics, represented by an adaptive roof spoiler.
In combination with the new high-performance Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) system, which will be part of the standard equipment for the new Cayenne Turbo, the SUV comes to a stop up to two meters earlier at full braking from 155 mph (250 kph).
