2018 Suzuki Swift Sport Adds Turbo, Removes Weight
After a teaser and some leaked images of the official brochure, the new Suzuki Swift Sport is finally making its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Cuter than ever, the feisty hatchback adopts a slightly more aggressive appearance and it’s also more aerodynamic. Only the Sport version gets the front spoiler lip and a new look for the grille featuring a honeycomb pattern.
To set it apart from its less powerful sibling, Suzuki has installed a pair of beefier side skirts, 17-inch polished alloy wheels, and will offer an exclusive Champion Yellow paint derived from the Junior WRC rally car. At the back, there’s a new diffuser and dual exhaust tips further contributing to the car’s sporty credentials. Rounding off the upgrades on the outside is the roof-mounted spoiler to optimize aero.
Compared to its predecessor, the new Swift Sport has managed to shave off a considerable 80 kilograms (176 pounds) and it now tips the scales at just 970 kg (2,138 lbs), but that’s not the only significant change.
Gone is the naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine as it had to make way for a turbocharged 1.4-liter. It develops 103 kilowatts (138 horsepower) and 170 lb-ft (230 Newton-meters) of torque, so while horsepower has barely changed (+4 hp), torque is up by 52 lb-ft (70 Nm) as a result of forced induction. Since the Swift Sport is all about having fun behind the wheel, the engine is paired exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox. It was taken from the old model, but Suzuki’s engineers have made some changes to improve shift smoothness.
The interior is home to semi-bucket seats and a new seven-inch touchscreen with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and MirrorLink connectivity. The red tachometer blends nicely with the other red accents spread throughout the cabin, while the flat-bottomed leather steering wheel gets red stitching. Alloy pedals and a chrome shift knob complete the package.
Like the regular Swift, the new Sport version is available with a wide array of safety tech, including lane departure warning (available between 60 and 160 kph), weaving alert function (60 kph or above), high beam assist (40 kph or faster), and adaptive cruise control.
