Spied: Chevrolet Corvette C8.R

Chevrolet's next-generation Corvette C8.R race car has been spotted undergoing shakedown testing at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

 

Racing Corvettes have traditionally been developed alongside their road-going counterparts, and that appears to be the case with the next-generation C8. The sighting of this C8.R model comes just a few weeks after the last spotting of the normal C8.

 

Like its showroom cousin, the next-generation C8.R will adopt a mid-engine layout. But unlike the normal Corvette, the R will have an aggressive front splitter, large rear diffusor and fixed wing designed specifically for track applications. We can also see a roll cage fitted to the car's interior.

 

It's unclear what engine is sitting in the middle of the C8.R, but leaked images have suggested that the Corvette street car will use a new twin-turbocharged V8. Output is unknown at this time, but the current top-dog Corvette, the ZR-1, puts out over 750 horsepower.

 

Look for the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 to debut in early 2019, followed closely by the racing version.
