New Peugeot 208 Makes Spyshots Debut With Striking 508 Features
The Peugeot 208 supermini has emerged for testing, and it looks spectacular. Peugeot doesn't play the mule game, so what we're getting is a car that looks 100% finished. It has bold... everything, including tiger-claw LED headlights you will recognize from a mile away and sporty front air intakes.
As the rumors suggested, the 208 is going to be a 5-door only and quite a lot bigger than its predecessor. However, Peugeot is just aligning its supermini model with the rest of the segment, not trying to outdo it.
The rear end looks more like that of the 508 wagon model. We also notice a double exhaust system and quite a large trunk spoiler, both of which are clear indications of a hot model. Is it a 208 GTi? At this point, it's hard to tell. We could just be dealing with a 208 GT, aligned with the speed and technology offered by the 508 GT and not necessarily aimed at hardcore drivers.
The 208 is based on a new PSA architecture for small cars called CMP, which is shared with the DS3 Crossback and probably the next Opel Corsa as well. They should all share engines, mostly small ones.
The ones worth mentioning are the 1.2-liter PureTech turbo and the 1.5-liter BlueHDI, one of the cleanest small diesels ever made with an output of up to 130 horsepower. Of course, there will be less powerful units too, as Peugeot is unlikely to give up on its naturally aspirated 1.0L, even though we don't like it.
Of course, the talk of the town is the electric 208, which has been all but confirmed. It should have about 115 horsepower and a range of up to 450 kilometers on its 50 kWh battery pack, a modest upgrade over rivals like the Renault Zoe.
