Higher range Nissan Leaf coming, just not right now
Ostensibly, Nissan's statement on Friday was for the purpose of announcing pricing of 2019 model year Leaf electric vehicles. However, deep within the press release was this sentence: "A longer-range version will be available in the future."
This is probably a reference to the suspected E-Plus version, which uses a 160 kW battery pack (60kW more than the standard version). The estimated range would be 225 miles, as opposed to the current 150 miles, while 0-60 time would drop from 8.5 seconds to 6.5. The E-Plus is also said to have DC fast charging capabilities of about 100 kW rather than 50 kW, and an additional thermal management system.
For now, though, it appears the 2019 Leaf is soldering on unchanged. Pricing carries over from 2018 as well, starting at $29,990 for the Leaf S, $32,490 for the SV, and $36,200 for the SL. Even without the upgrades, it shows no sign of relinquishing its crown as the best-selling electric car in the world, with a tally of 348,000 sold.
