Volkswagen Golf plug-in hybrid to receive GTE moniker

A new report indicates Volkswagen will start selling later this year a plug-in hybrid version of the Golf with the "GTE" designation.

 

It will essentially be Volkswagen's variant of the Audi A3 e-tron so expect to find a 1.4-liter TFSI working together with an electric motor, a six-speed dual-clutch e-S tronic gearbox and a 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The conventional engine will deliver 150 HP (110 kW) while the electric motor is going to provide 102 HP (75 kW) which will enable the Golf GTE to have a combined output of 204 HP (150 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

 

This hardware arrangement will allow the model to return 156.5 mpg US (188 mpg UK or 1.5 liters / 100 km) with corresponding CO2 emissions of just 35 g/km. In electric mode it will cover a distance of up to 31 miles (50 km) and should be capable of hitting a top speed of 81 mph (130 km/h). When used as a plug-in hybrid, the Golf GTE will need 7.6 seconds to cover the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint.

 

It is believed Volkswagen will start producing the Golf GTE later this year.
